Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the method of scientifically applying interventions based upon the basic principles of learning theory to assess and treat maladaptive behaviors, improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree, and to demonstrate, through data collection, that the interventions implemented are responsible for the change in behavior. ABA centers on the principles of learning theory, which explains how learning takes place. For example, positive reinforcement is one of the most well known techniques used in ABA. With this technique, a behavior is followed by some sort of social praise or reward; thus, the behavior is more likely to occur again in the future. Socially significant behaviors include targeting social skills, adaptive functioning (toileting, dressing, eating, vocational work, etc.), academics and communication. Parents, caregivers, and paraprofessionals involved with the client will be trained in the basic principles of ABA for the continuation of treatment outside of direct behavioral therapy. ABA services are provided by highly trained professionals under the direct supervision of a Board Certified (assistant) Behavior Analyst (BCBA/BCaBA).
Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) have a doctoral or master’s degree in behavior analysis, education, psychology, and other related fields. They have extensive training and experience in designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating a wide range of ABA programs for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.
